The decomposition of an electrolyte into simpler substances using an electric current. The electrolyte is usually an ionic compound in the liquid state or in solution.
Water is a covalent compound but it partially ionises to form hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions. The electrolysis of water produces hydrogen and oxygen.
