A charged particle formed when an atom, or group of atoms, loses or gains electrons. Positively charged ions are called cations and negatively charged ions are called anions. Ions that form from one atom are called monatomic ions. Ions that form from a group of two or more atoms are called polyatomic ions (also called molecular ions).
