A substance in which one or more carbon atoms are joined to atoms of other elements by covalent bonds. The other elements are usually hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen or a halogen such as chlorine.
Hydrogen carbonates and carbonates are not organic compounds, even though they contain carbon atoms covalently joined to hydrogen and/or oxygen atoms.
