The mass of a formula unit of a substance compared to 1⁄12th the mass of a carbon-12 atom. It has the symbol Mr. You can use the term “relative molecular mass” instead if the substance exists as molecules.
You calculate the relative formula mass of a substance by adding together all the relative atomic masses of all the atoms or ions in its formula.
